Petroleum Hydrocarbon Composition of Oily Sludge and Contaminated Soils in a Decommissioned Oilfield Waste Pit under Desert Conditions

چکیده
Field and laboratory investigations were conducted to characterize the composition of petroleum hydrocarbons in oily sludge underlying contaminated soils a decommissioned oilfield waste pit Kuwait. The results show that hydrocarbon was spatially variable. Highly toxic species such as BTEX PAHs generally lacking, both sludge- soil-borne dominated by long-chain hydrocarbons. soil contamination depth very shallow although localized deep profiles (>0.5 m) found. A loose relationship established between TPH soil. On average, had greater percentage shorter-chain fractions (either aliphatics or aromatics), compared sludge. environmental risk from is considered be relatively low. For cost-effective management decommissioning an pit, containment using soil-capping approach may sufficient minimize possible adverse impacts this represent option superior other costly remediation strategies.

Persulfate Oxidation for the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils
The feasibility of total petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated (TPH) soil remediation was studied using persulfate oxidation. Factors tested included type of activator, persulfate concentration, number of persulfate applications, and reaction time. Probe chemicals were used to study effi ciency of the persulfate oxidation mechanism. The best activation method used Fe2+, which achieved 40.8% TPH de...
متن کاملRhizodegradation of Hydrocarbon from Oily Sludge
Rhizoremediation involves the use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to remove organic pollutants from terrestrial environment. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of rhizoremediation through inoculation of hydrocarbon degrading bacterial strains with and without nutrients in the rhizosphere sporadically become contaminated with oily sludge. Bacterial str...
متن کاملInvestigation of Hydrocarbon-degrading Microbial Communities of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils in Harghita County, Romania
Microorganisms able to degrade hydrocarbon pollutants (gasoline, and other petroleum derivatives) have been isolated from two contaminated areas (Sândominic and Bălan) by enrichment technique. The hydrocarbon degradative capacity of contaminated sites were determined using “Biometer flasks” (respiratory CO2 production measurement). Total counts and hydrocarbon degrading counts were determined u...
متن کاملBiodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...
متن کاملExtraction of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminants (Diesel and Waste Oil) in Soils by Accelerated Solvent Extraction
INTRODUCTION Underground storage tanks containing hydrocarbonbased fuels are found worldwide. Many of these tanks have leaks, allowing gasoline, diesel, oil, or other hydrocarbon materials to contaminate the surrounding soil. In 1992, only 2 million of the 5 million tanks in the U.S. were monitored for leaks. However, underground storage tanks represent only one of many sources of hydrocarbon c...
